Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming education by creating new opportunities for more personalised and interactive language learning. The presentation by Destin Feutseu Dassi, PhD, examines how AI can enhance the teaching of reading, listening, speaking and writing, while highlighting the challenges and ethical considerations involved.
For reading comprehension, AI can assess learners’ abilities, identify difficulties and generate personalised exercises and tests. AI tutors can provide individualised feedback, explanations and opportunities for discussion, while also summarising texts and combining text, audio and visual resources.
During listening comprehension, AI can adapt the speed and complexity of materials to learners’ proficiency levels, provide feedback on pronunciation and intonation, and generate subtitles and transcripts. It can also provide personalised listening resources and innovative materials such as AI-generated music.
For speaking, conversational AI enables learners to practise dialogue and receive feedback on pronunciation, grammar and fluency. Speech evaluation and generation tools can identify weaknesses, provide pronunciation models and support preparation for presentations and interviews.
As far as writing is concerned, AI can provide feedback on grammar, syntax and style, suggest vocabulary and improve sentence structure, while AI-supported collaboration can encourage peer feedback.
