In her presentation, Mrs Tchamkam Ola Nadege explains how to prepare and deliver a Competency-Based Approach (CBA) lesson, emphasising a shift from teacher-centred, content-based teaching to learner-centred and action-oriented learning. CBA aims to enable learners to combine knowledge, skills and attitudes to solve real-life problems. Effective lesson planning should consider the curriculum, learners’ needs and characteristics, content, materials, assessment strategies and available time.
She highlights the five domains of life and shows how language lessons can be built around real-life situations and the four language skills. She illustrates this through a lesson on using conditional structures to discuss environmental issues, with clearly defined expected outcomes and attention to learners’ previous knowledge.
A CBA lesson follows nine stages: introduction, discovery, research, comparison and validation, institutionalisation, consolidation, partial integration, remediation, and a bilingual game for reinforcement. The approach encourages problem-solving, active learner participation and the application of newly acquired knowledge in more complex contexts.
